Shopping Excursion at Newflower Farmers Market

This new store opened in South Austin earlier this week. I'd read that they were packed then, so I thought that 9:30 on a Saturday morning wouldn't be too bad. Wrong. There were two parking spaces empty when I got there -- far from the door, but then, I normally park far from the door anyway.

Despite the "Farmers Market" name, according to a statesman.com article, they don't currently carry that much local produce, but they are working on it. They had a nice produce section -- small pineapples for 88 cents, and the kale I got was quite a bit less than what I'd pay at Central Market or HEB. Got some small pink grapefruit, too. I peel them like oranges. On the other hand, (bulk) pecans were considerably more than CMs, as I realized when I compared my purchase to the nuts we already had at home.

It's not a super large store -- it sort of reminds me of a Sun Harvest in size and scope of products. The staff was helpful -- I couldn't seem to find corn tortillas, and a stocker told me that they hadn't anticipated how busy they were going to be and actually ran out -- they have inquiries out to their producers about getting more soon. I'll just make a trek to CM or Randalls later.

My purchases were 1/3 and 1/2 the amount of what I spent the last 2 weeks at CM & HEB. To be fair, I did do a lot of staple buying recently, and today I went with a list and pretty much stuck to it, except for the nuts & some pecan/rice crackers.

This is what is on the menu for this week:

Twice baked potatoes with Kale -- I'm making several to freeze and use in the next couple of weeks.

Chicken & asparagus stir fry with either brown rice or rice stick. We'll have that tonight, and with any luck have some leftovers.

King Ranch Chicken/tortilla casserole -- made without canned soup mixes, so I can better control salt & fat content. I'll sneak in more veggies than the traditional recipe, too.

Pastitsio -- sort of like a Greek lasagna, only made with a pasta that is sort of like ziti instead of lasagna noodles. (again, I'll modify the recipe somewhat.)

Asian slaw (cole slaw, but the dressing is lemon or lime juice, rice vinegar, olive oil, soy sauce)

Stuff for salads.

I'll also make either French bread or a whole wheat/cornmeal bread and maybe hermit bars w/whole wheat flour.

So, plenty for leftovers and lunches and plenty to freeze for next week or the week after.

This past Sunday I made beef/barley/vegetable soup, spinach/mushroom lasagna, and the whole wheat/cornmeal bread (which makes great sandwiches for lunches.) We did go out one night (fish tacos, me & a grilled shrimp salad, Scott. It really seems to work for us to have a couple of hours of intensive cooking on one weekend day instead of cooking every night. We usually have a few seafood/fish meals a week, but I'll buy that the day we consume it, and it cooks pretty quickly.
